Caribbean Cruise to St. Maarten, Dominica, Grenada, Bonaire and Aruba
February 14 to 20, 2009
Here are a few photos from a spectacular Caribbean Cruise that I took with Ann. We had a half day to explore Old San Juan before departing on the Celebrity Summit.
Thanks to Ann's Elite Status with Celebrity Cruise Lines, we got upgraded to a large cabin with balcony in "Concierge Class", the 2nd highest level of treatment on the ship. Only the suites were above us in location and amenities, so we had a birds eye view when in port and sailing.
Some highlights include a tour around the entire island of St. Maarten with stops at Marigot Bay on the French side and the obligatory side trips to the local beaches. We also did some kayaking down a river and out into the ocean on Dominica one morning (with a trip to some waterfalls and a swim in a beautiful grotto in the afternoon), and a day trip all over Grenada where we picked fresh fruits and nuts right off the trees. Lots of waterfalls, beautiful tropical scenery with mountains and gorges, plus a spin by the Botanical Gardens.
On Bonaire we rented a jeep and saw most of the island, stopping along the way to go snorkeling in the fabled clear waters. Aruba is where Ann did the helmet dive and I hiked across the island and up their equivalent of a mountain called Hooiberg (zoomed up the 600 vertical feet in under 9 minutes after the 6 mile journey to the base).
I'll try to post some more photos and videos in the near future.

Grenada is alive and kicking as seen by the steam coming from this volcanic vent. There are bubbling mud pots and sulfur vents around the island, along with a large boiling lake.

Enjoying lunch on the deck of the ship. We had room service bring breakfast every morning so we could dine privately on our own balcony. Gorged on 3 to 4 gourmet meals each day and I still managed to lose 3 pounds on the trip. Must have been that hike on Aruba in the mid-day tropical sun when I traversed the island on foot instead of taking a taxi to Hooiberg. Good thing I had my "Don of Arabia" hat with the neck protector fabric or I'd have become a fresh cadaver for the local iguanas.
